I was born in Berlin, Germany after the Nuremberg Laws were passed and all civil rights of German Jews were taken away. After my father disappeared, I lived with my mother until we were arrested and deported to Terezin (Theresienstadt). I was placed in the children’s section where I remained for two years. My mother worked in the adult section. We were allowed to visit once every other month for one hour. Terezin was liberated in May 1945. My mother and I were two of the lucky ones that survived. After two years in a displaced persons camp, we came to America where I attended school for the first time.
